MARKETING? PARTYING? OR JUST WEIRD? ART PARTY 9

A big part of having successful clothing and accessories company is networking. Here's how we network in the fashion world...

BACKSTAGE PASS: SHOOT WITH KACI OWENS & LEXY JO

A little while back I did a shoot with Kaci of Owen's Photography and the wonderful model/photographer Lexy Jo with make-up by John Dye. Peculiar Pigeon aka Aileen, one of my best friends, assisted with the shoot and took the behind the scenes shots. So you have her to thank for your backstage pass. Thanks, Peculiar Pigeon.

The shoot was funny and crazy in all the good ways. Kaci and Lexy are great to work with and both adapt and quickly overcome any obstacles. Mr. Dye is fun, inspiring, and always gives you a great laugh.

I'm excited to work with you all again!
Thanks for the great shoot, dolls!

P.S. Screw the editor and his bad taste! :-D

As all activities can be learning experiences...one negative of the shoot was that I felt slightly rushed, and thus this shoot has prompted me to set a new rule for fashion shoots:
Two hours for hair and makeup
One hour allotted per outfit change per model, with an extra 30mins for hair and make-up if their are any make-up or hair changes.
Example: A shoot with two models with three outfits per model and one make-up change each.
=
2 hours for initial hair and make-up
2 models with 3 outfits each is 2x3= 6 hours
1 make-up change is 30mins x 1 change per model = 1hour
So...
2hours + 6 hours + 1 hour = 9 hour photo-shoot

No more rushing. Rushing equals stress. Stress equals acne. Acne is yucky.
So NO MORE RUSHING!  :-)

Yep, that's me doing hair.

Aileen being bored and taking pictures of leaves. Dork!

WHAT THE HECK IS HIGH FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY???

An example of HIGH FASHION photography
It's artistic, not typical fashion, and a bit odd like high fashion should always be...

So I've noticed that many portrait, wedding, and beginning photographers, as well as, up-coming models and start-up publications do not understand the concept of High Fashion photography, oftentimes mistaking glamour and/or beauty photography for high fashion.
This post will hopefully clear up some of the confusion...

High fashion photography focuses on the FASHION, not the model. The point of this type of photography is to tell a fashion story, make a fashion statement, as well as, promote the clothing.
In high fashion photography the clothing is the main focus of the picture, NOT the model or the lighting, as these aspects of the picture only serve as compliments to the clothing. High Fashion photography requires a wardrobe stylist; it's not high fashion photography without a an actual clothing stylist.
While the model focuses on posing and the photographer focuses on the lighting etc., the wardrobe stylist focuses on ensuring that the fashion is pristine, and well, a bit mind blowing. This type of photography is often on the artistic side, as well as being, slightly extreme. High fashion looks are not something you would normally wear in your everyday activities.

Now onto GLAMOUR PHOTOGRAPHY, glamour photography is many times confused with High Fashion, but it is definitely not the same. Glamour focuses on the model and making the model look super hot, and the majority of times includes very little clothing. You may ask, but how can it be about fashion without clothing? The answer is, it can't. Glamour photography is not fashion photography.
I just blew your mind a little bit, didn't I?

An easy way to tell the difference between these two types of photography is by looking at the focus of the picture, if you look at the photo and the first thoughts you have are along the lines of, "Wow, that model looks sexy!" Then it's glamour photography. If you look at the picture and the first thing you think is, "Wow, I want that dress" or "Wow, that's an awesome outfit." Then it's either High Fashion, and I'm throwing another type in just to confuse you a little bit more, or Catalogue photography.

Now the difference between High Fashion and Catalogue is simple: Catalogue photography almost always shows the model smiling and having a great time. This type of photography is simply meant to SELL THE CLOTHING. The smiles say, "If you buy our brand, you'll always be happy while wearing it." or "Our brand is directly linked to happiness." There's no crazy fashion when it comes to catalogue, just simple, everyday, yet stylish, outfits.

And because I know you're probably still a little confused about the different types (understandably, due to fashion and knowing the different types of photography not being a knowledge that you are born with), here are some examples of each type of photography discussed in this post...

Obviously HIGH FASHION--the model's face is barely visible, and well it's telling a fashion story, but you're not quite sure what that story is.

Another HIGH FASHION example--
here the overly styled outfits are obviously the focus, not the models.

In this picture the first thing you notice is the dress, so what does that tell you...
It's HIGH FASHION because the main focuses are the fashion and the story.

The fabric textures, the shocking style, the focus on fashion. Yep, definitely High Fashion photography.

The model's face is almost covered up, but what the heck is she wearing...High Fashion.

Another, what the heck is she wearing...sooo, HIGH FASHION.

Now here are a few examples of GLAMOUR and BEAUTY photography...
(Glamour being a glammed up version of Beauty photography; Beauty focuses on natural beauty.)

What do you focus on when you look at this picture? It's obviously not the "outfit," but doesn't the model look hot?

Miss Scarlett looking glamorous.

Well, SHE looks pretty, and I have no idea what her outfit looks like. That's Beauty.

No denying that this one is Glamour.

Old school Glamour. RIP Miss Taylor :'-(

No clothing visible, just Miss Megan looking beautiful. Glamour.

And some CATALOGUE shots just for good measure...

A little less confused now...or maybe, a little more? ha ha!

Backstage Pass- WARNING NUDE MODELS AHEAD ha!

Here is your own personal BACKSTAGE PASS to the Swinskey, Roarie-yum, and Lola R shoot.
Warning: this post does include "nudity".

I have to say, this was the most entertaining photoshoot that I've participated in thus far. It was my first time working with the lovely and insane-in-a-good-way, Roarie-yum and the awesome Doug Swinskey.
The shoot started with me getting completely lost and ending up in the wrong town. Yea, that's me, terrible at directions. When I finally make it to location, Roarie and Lola, are running around slightly manic. ha ha! I believe many energy drinks must have been involved. They were quite entertaining. :-D Also, Doug introduces himself saying, "Hi, I'm Doug Swinskey, and I haven't slept in 48 hours so please excuse me if I seem a little out of it." Oh lord, what have I gotten myself into.
The shoot went on to include lots of "Roarie, stop dancing! I'm trying to put this dress on you. I have safety pins, and I will use them!" "Roarie, put the clothes back on, this is a fashion shoot not a nude shoot!" "Lola, how do you handle this insanity all the time?!" ha ha haa!! Great times!!
Thank you, Lola for introducing me to them.

Swinskey shooting Miss Lola R
Love how the lighting what the sun was doing for these shots!

A rare moment: Roarie-yum with clothes actually on!

"Yep, a headdress is all you actually need."
Roarie giving fashion advice to Lola.
(Sorry about the blurriness)

Vogue!

Another blurry shot, she's workin' it though!

Roarie-yum reiterating that a headdress is all you need.
Best shot of the day! Crazy!

Can't wait to see the final shots!

Finally got her to lose the headdress! But of course, still no clothing!

Thanks a million to Doug Swinskey, Lola R, and Roarie-yum!
